I was grading one of my 5th graders’ homework today, and realized that he wrote (and then erased) “I can’t breathe” on it

And nothing I’ve seen about the police brutality has hit me harder than that instant, when I could see firsthand how it’s affecting this 10 year old black boy from Michigan that I happen to care a hell of a lot about

He’s thinking so much about it (and is likely so scared that he or any black person he knows could be killed just for walking down the street, or maybe so moved by the protests that are happening) that he’s writing these words in the middle of his spelling homework
