Those American dinner parties when you’re kind of the outsider and they pick your brain and bully you in the most passive aggressive way but also by putting you on the spot when everyone is seated but you dodge every question with grace and win the debate ethically until some other people start actually arguing and it gets heated and they ask around the table for everyone’s take on their feud …so now you’re watching other people argue and you’re like picking at your leaks having a side conversation about for music or something and you subconsciously team up w the 3 other people not arguing like you have this psychic link where you all non verbally mutually agree to change the subject to the music and it doesn’t work immediately but after a while it ends and than there’s this moment where everyone is scattered around w their last few drinks of the evening and one group kind of is having a really deep convo and you ignore them so you find these two men talking about people throwing themselves off buildings and the nets they build to stop the suicide not because they care if people kill themselves but because they don’t want property damage and you make a comment basically concurring what they are saying but in a way that’s like “from what you’re describing I feel as shocked as you do” but more fluid and they give you a weird look and you than go fill your glass and this woman who’s husband just gave you the weird look hugs you and than you are now in the middle of this conversation about a new person at the hosts work and you’re nodding and smiling and affirming and then it’s your turn to speak and you make things light and go home. the food and ambiance was great and you left feeling a little closer to a few people who eventually you’ll never see again….that’s how it feels to eat this salad I had 30 minutes ago.
